Is Star Citizen free?
Creating an account on the RSI website is free, but you’ll need to purchase a Game Package if you’d like to play the game consistently year-round.
Star Citizen holds “Free Fly” events throughout the year. During Free Fly, anyone with a Star Citizen account can log into the game and fly pre-selected ships regardless of whether or not they bought a Game Package. The number of types of ships available varies. Free Flys routinely happen during Invictus Launch Week in May and the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo in November, with a few other Free Fly events sprinkled in between.
How much is Star Citizen?
Game Packages range from US$45 to $15,000. There are occasionally sales and discounts that can bring the price slightly lower. Some packages grant access to Star Citizen, while others also include the Squadron 42 single-player game.
Where to buy ships in Star Citizen
There are three ways to buy ships in Star Citizen. The first is with real money. The other two ways are with two separate in-game currencies.
To buy Star Citizen ships with real money, visit the Pledge Store on the RSI website. If you already have a Game Package, you can browse the Standalone Ship section of the Pledge Store. Ships and vehicles sold here are generally cheaper than the ones sold with Game Packages. Additionally, some ships and vehicles are only available as standalone purchases.
If you would like to get ships with in-game currency only, there are two ways to do so. First, you can buy or rent ships and vehicles at any dealership in the Public Universe—Star Citizen’s open-world MMO component—with aUEC. Ships and vehicles are available for purchase and rental at New Deal, which is located at Taesa Spaceport in Loreville, on Hurston in the Stanton system.
Ships and vehicles can be rented (but not purchased) at many more locations in the Public Universe. These locations include Vantage Rentals, which is found at any space station with a Refinery Deck; Traveler Rentals, found at any space station with a Cargo Deck; and Regal Luxury Rentals, which is only found at the New Babbage Interstellar Spaceport on MicroTech in the Stanton system.
Second, you can rent ships in Arena Commander—a “quick play” mode that lets players experiment with their ships in a no-risk environment. Here, players use Requisition Equipment Credits (REC) to rent ships for a few days at a time. Players can earn REC easily by fighting off hordes of Pirate and Vanduul in either of the game’s “Swarm” modes.
