Overview of amphibious assault ships
An amphibious assault ship is a type of amphibious warfare ship that’s used to land and support ground forces on enemy territory during an amphibious assault. They are an evolution of early aircraft carriers that were converted for use as helicopter carriers. Amphibious assault ships are fundamentally different from aircraft carriers.
An amphibious assault ship’s aviation facilities have the primary role of hosting helicopters to support forces ashore rather than to support strike aircraft. But some are capable of embarking STOVL (Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing) aircraft like the Harrier or F-35B variant of the Lightning II fighters for conducting combat air patrol and air support for an expeditionary unit ashore.
Additionally, most of these ships can carry or support different types of landing craft, such as air-cushioned landing craft (hovercraft) or LCUs (Landing Craft Utility).
Modern amphibious assault ship designs support helicopters and landing craft, with most including a “well deck”—a hangar-like structure fore or aft of a ship that can be flooded to launch and recover landing craft or other small barges and boats. Other capabilities include one or more medical bays for treating casualties, a machine shop, an armory, and of course enough cargo room to support logistics.
The largest amphibious assault ship fleet is operated by the United States Navy, but many other nations operate them as well.

Relevant Carrack specifications
The Anvil Aerospace Carrack is a Size 5 (Large) exploration spacecraft designed to support expedition and pathfinding gameplay in Star Citizen. Despite being 126.5 meters long and. 76.5 meters wide, good landing gear design and placement means even a beginner pilot can find a place to set down. Additionally, being an expeditionary vessel , it’s capable of navigating uncharted jump points.
Defensive specifications of the Anvil Carrack
The Anvil Carrack possesses no less than three Size 1 radars and two Size 2 radars that support situational awareness for four Size 5 turrets.
The turrets provide the ship with an unprecedented 360-degrees of coverage. Three turrets—the dorsal and broadside ones—are manned, while the top turret is remotely controlled from a station on the upper bridge. All turrets are equipped with two Size 4 weapon hardpoints.
Originally intended to support exploration, the Carrack doesn’t feature any warhead launchers.
The Carrack possesses redundant shielding in the form of two Size 3 shield generators. Each one capable of generating the four shield faces (fore, aft, port, starboard) that are typical for that component size.
Finally, all of these systems are supported by a pair of Size 3 coolers and a single Size 3 power plant.
Facilities and amenities
A medical bay, armory, hangar bay, vehicle garage, equipment repair bay, exploration drone control stations, and modular cargo pods make the Anvil Carrack one of the most versatile ships in the game.
The medical bay contains enough medical beds to support three casualties. The primary medical bed is currently Medical Tier 2. The Carrack’s Tier 2 medical can stabilize a casualty, heal moderate injuries (such as those that would cause limping), and enables players to respawn up to 50 kilometers away.
The armory features two weapon racks capable of storing 12 Size 1 personal weapons and 16 Size 2 or Size 3 personal weapons. The armory also contains enough suit storage closets to store up to six suits of any size, although an additional nine suit closets can be found throughout the ship.
The hangar bay can safely and comfortably support two Argo Astronautics MPUVs, or multiples of many other Snub ships. The vehicle garage is designed to support an RSI Ursa Rover, but has enough space to house two relatively safely. When it comes to smaller vehicles, multiples can easily be housed in the garage.
The equipment repair bay and exploration drone control stations have not yet been implemented in Star Citizen, nor has much of the cargo pods’ functionality. However, general ship and vehicle salvage and repair has, and the Carrack’s cargo pods possess a functioning cargo grid as well as direct access to the pod’s contents via a personnel elevator.
Another feature that’s yet to be implemented is the extensive scanning, mapping, charting sensor suites. However, the Carrack’s current command and control facilities support a basic level of ISTAR (intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance) through the use of 3D holographic radar, the compass, and various unobstructed observation points that are positioned very high off of the ground.
The Carrack has enough beds to permanently support a minimum of six crew, with a minimum crew of five required to be fully combat effective. However, with an appropriate snub and vehicle allocation and stowage, the ship is currently capable of safely transporting a complement of 36 (and possibly more) personnel.

Why it’s an amphibious assault ship
While the Carrack should not be considered a dropship, it’s versatility—coupled with the promise of tough armor and an as-yet-to-be-implement deployable armored bridge canopy—means that the Carrack is positioned well to serve as an amphibious assault ship analog in Star Citizen.
In addition to the crew, the Carrack is fully capable of supporting one or more squad’s worth of personnel. The armory allows it to fully outfit (or refit) 6 or more troops, with lots of spare locker room for specialty weapons and extra armored suits. Meanwhile, Tier 2 medical facilities allow it to treat moderate injuries and stabilize any serious casualties. Additionally, the Carrack can serve as a respawn points up to 50 kilometers away from the front lines.
The hangar can easily support a pair of Argo MPUV Personnel snubs for air assaults, a pair of Razor EXs for special operations, and even up to four Fury variants for aerospace support. When the hangar’s refueling capability is finally implemented, the Carrack will be able to conduct continuous aerospace operations.
In the same vein, the vehicle garage can house a pair of Ursa rovers for mechanized infantry squads, or several smaller rovers or “space bikes” for motorized patrols, reconnaissance and surveillance, or a quick-reaction force.
The inclusion of salvage and repair gameplay allows structural damage to be repaired, while damaged components and spent ordnance can be replaced. Additionally, the future functionality of the repair room promises to give players the ability to repair infantry equipment and some ship and vehicle components.
Aside from being able to hold up 456 SCU, there’s plenty of room in any of the cargo pods for extra components, missiles, unspent ballistic weapons, and cargo boxes. Cargo boxes can in turn contain pre-filled RMC cannisters that can be used for repairs, additional infantry gear, and various other supplies. Each cargo pod has large interior doors and an elevator. When used with a Multi-Tool tractor beam, these features easily facilitate the movement of much larger items—such as ship and vehicle components and weapons—in and out of the cargo pods.
A planned future feature of the Carrack’s cargo pods is that they’re intended to be lowered to the ground and have their port and starboard sides open up. This will provide the Carrack with a roll-on/roll-off capability similar to the Crusader Hercules series, and would greatly contribute to the speed with which the ship could deliver a sizable mechanized or motorized force. This is something to keep in mind as each cargo pod appears to have enough room to fit at least one Ursa-sized rover, and may even be able to fit two transverse of the Carrack’s keel. As previously published, the Ursa rover makes for an excellent light infantry fighting vehicle.
Instead of the Ursa, multiples of various combat and logistics-oriented vehicles would also be able to fit—from many different types of two- and four-wheeled rovers, to snubs at the smaller end of the spectrum.
The drone control stations also have no functionality. However, once the drone system is implemented, it’s reasonable to expect the ability to use exploration drones for remote search, reconnaissance, surveillance, and possibly even target acquisition. When coupled with the future expansion and implementation of the Carrack’s scanning, mapping, and charting capabilities, the potential for full-spectrum (tactical, operational, and strategic) command and control exists.
Yet another forward-looking consideration is the promised heavy armor, including a deployable armored bridge canopy. Combined with the Carrack’s excellent weapon coverage and multiple Size 1 and Size 2 radars, players should be able to expect these features to turn the ship into an effective pillbox against smaller aerospace threats.
